Offset printing takes advantage of the opposing forces of ink and water to produce economically, within certain limitations, very exact printing. This modern way of printing, which is often called lithography, has been to the printing industry of the 20th Century what Gutenberg's press was to book publishing.

Offset printing offsets each page onto an aluminium plate which has been doused in water. The plate stamps the image onto a rubber blanket which in turn offsets it onto the printing paper.

The process didn't go quite far enough in its early stage, because wet paper and damp ink will almost certainly smudge. A special oven to dry the paper - without scorching it - had to be included in the process.
