Schlumberger e-City, a business segment of Schlumberger Limited, today announced that Vinci Park has installed solar-powered Stelio Pay & Display (P&D) terminals in 17 London Underground tube station car parks, having had its contract for their management renewed, and also a further 17 stations for which it has recently won the contract.
Solar-powered machines were chosen as they minimise the ground works required to install them because no mains electrical connections are required. With complex electrical systems and cabling at each station, this was an important consideration with regard to safety, costs and the need to avoid potential power supply disruptions.
The Stelio terminals were also chosen for their inherent security. This was a prime consideration for Vinci Park, as many stations are in areas with high crime rates. Each machine is equipped with various layers of physical protection, together with innovative Schlumberger security devices, to safeguard its operating capabilities and the contents of the cash box.
“London Underground was keen on the solar power option as they wanted to limit any ground works to a minimum, owing to the large quantities of cabling and electrical installations located in and around tube stations”, noted Philip Young, Vinci’s Senior Contracts Manager. “We have to be very careful when working in their car parks, so the Schlumberger solar-powered option was the obvious answer.”
In the additional 17 car parks, Vinci Park has replaced a combination of barrier systems and “honesty boxes” inherited from the previous parking management company. The provision of P&D terminals is intended to optimise parking revenues for London Underground, whilst providing a more reliable service for drivers. London Underground specifies that all car parks with more than 70 spaces are manned.
