Police issued parking fines could rise by £35 as part of a Home Office initiative to secure funding for victims of crime, according to proposals leaked by The Sunday Times.
In a letter, alleged to have been sent by Home Secretary David Blunkett to cabinet members, a recommendation has been put forward to impose a £35 surcharge on fixed penalty fines as part of a package to boost the state compensation fund for victims of violent crime. The latest figures on fixed penalty fines reveal that approximately 3m notices were issued in 2001 for motoring offences alone, meaning that a surcharge could raise £100m a year.
