IHIE welcomes the ODPM’s decision to develop guidance on car parking standards in residential developments; it is the next natural step to follow up “Better Streets, Better Places”.
There has been much controversy and debate over the standard parking provision of 1.5 parking places per dwelling since PPG3 was published in 2000. This has led to different Local Authorities interpreting the PPG3 in different ways.
“The production of countrywide guidance is very much needed. Whilst accepting that different areas have different requirements and priorities, the guidance will serve to establish a national base and will enable developers and Local Authorities alike to adopt a common approach”, said Gerry Harvey, senior Vice President, Institute of Highway Incorporated Engineers, Buckinghamshire CC.
