BPA announce new President

Source: http://www.bpa.co.uk

Malcolm Pickett, was inaugurated as the new president of the BPA at the Annual General Meeting held on the 23rd of June 2004. Mr Pickett has worked in the transport industry for the past 38 years, working primarily at the Transport Research Laboratory, and began conducting research studies into parking 14 years ago. He has been a member of the BPA for many years and has been an elected member of council for the past 6 years.

At the AGM, Mr Pickett spoke of the many BPA initiatives he wishes to help drive forward this coming presidential year. In particular he spoke about two BPA initiatives that will help to counter the current press concerns over the 'over zealous' implementation of decriminalised parking.

These include:

  • The new 'Model' Contract the BPA are developing with the DfT's support, for use by Local Authorities when hiring contractors to carry out parking enforcement
  • The new accredited Parking Attendant training course being developed with City & Guilds and supported by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority.

This new BPA contract emphasises that performance be measured on keeping the streets free of congestion, the primary aim of enforcing regulations, not on the number of tickets issued. The BPA hope that this new 'model' contract and standardising PA training across the country will help to encourage best practise in the industry and improve the perception of PA's.

On the 14th of July the BPA will hold their annual Presidents Event on the Terrace of the House of Commons, Westminster, to which parking professionals and Government Officials have been invited. This event is held to encourage networking and the discussion of parking issues. Mr Pickett will speak to guests about the coming BPA year and what he hopes to help the Association achieve. The event is being hosted by David Chidgey MP, for Eastleigh and David Jamieson, MP, Transport Minister at the DfT will speak at the event.

The BPA wish to thank Alan Clark, BPA President for 2003-2004, for all his work and dedication during his presidential year.
