Westminster City Council has dropped plans to charge motor cyclists for on-street parking following concerns that the scheme does not address the needs of the motorcyclists in central London at the current time.
Charles Cronin, Cabinet Member for Transportation and Infrastructure, said demand for motor cycle parking was increasing, but there was only finite road space for parking in the capital.
"We found that the proposed scheme would actually reduce motor cycle spaces," Cllr Cronin said.
"I see the way forward is to create new motorcycle parking spaces in our off-street car parks for which a charge of around one fifth of the car rate would be appropriate."
Councillor Cronin said:
"We listened to motorcyclists who questioned the value they would derive from the scheme which would in effect replace free on-street parking with fewer motorcycle parking places for a charge.
"A 10 percent increase in existing motorcycle parking bays in our car parks would create an extra 400 spaces. These spaces would be available to season ticket holders. This is the direction that we wish to go to extend provision for motorcyclists.
"This approach expands parking provision as requested by motorcyclists and offers a secure weatherproof environment at a reasonable price."
