In association with Vodafone, Dublin City Council is trailing the “mPark” parking system. The “mPark” system offers Vodafone customer the opportunity to pay for their parking via their Mobile phones.
The mPark system is activated by dialling a special number and entering the Pay and Display machines ID code along with the customers pin number, once the call is completed a message is sent to the Pay and Display machine and a ticket is issued.
The mPark parking system, which will help turn mobile phones into mobile wallet and has involved a “significant investment” according to Owen Keegan Dublin’s Director of traffic.
During the two month trail customers of Vodafone will get a € 50 per month in an effort to encourage them to use the scheme, this will cost Dublin City Council approximately 7% of the parking revenue collected in trail area.
The trail area, which covers Parnell Street and Stephen’s Green, has 200 new machines fitted with modems and modified buttons, the older machines have been moved to a new location.
Dublin City Council originally where going to introduce smart cards but the cost of setting up an infrastructure was prohibitive.
Mr Owen Keegan (assistant city manager and director of traffic) said, “We believe that the service will take off “ adding that the option of paying for parking by cash would always be retained. Please go to www.mpark.ie and find more information.
