At Newcastle Airport, security on site is a top priority. The Airport is delighted therefore, to have been presented with a ‘Secured Car Park Award’ by Northumbria Police.
Developed by the Association of Chief Police Officers, the Secured Car Parks Scheme is a national initiative, offering recognition to car park owners who create a safe and secure environment for motorists and their vehicles. To qualify for the award the long stay car park at the Airport had to meet high standards relating to lighting, vehicle and pedestrian access, surveillance and security, with the aim of restricting opportunities for crime to be committed.
Working in conjunction with Northumbria Police, the British Parking Association and Central Parking System (who manage the car parks), the Airport has developed increased security measures in and around the long stay car parking facilities, including CCTV, barriers and electronic fencing. In addition, Airport security staff and Northumbria Police officers carry out regular patrols and the car parking kiosks are manned 24 hours a day by CPS staff.
The award was presented to Hugh Williamson, Director of Personnel at Newcastle Airport, by Superintendent John Graham of Northumbria Police, following a series of rigorous audits at the end of last year.
Mr Williamson, who co-ordinated the Airport’s work towards achieving the award, said: "Thanks to a concerted team effort, many months of hard work have been rewarded with the achievement of the Secured Car Park Award. We are not complacent however, and will look to build on this success by continuing to maintain the high standards we have set ourselves in providing secure parking for thousands of holiday makers.
"We are pleased to be able to offer holiday makers, who leave their vehicles at the Airport, increased confidence and peace of mind in the knowledge that our facilities have been independently judged safe and secure."
Ian Hiles, CPS Contract Manager, added: "Newcastle Airport’s investment in increased security measures, in and around the long stay car park, has provided a modern, safe and welcoming facility for our customers."
Superintendent John Graham, area commander for Newcastle North, said: "Examples in other parts of the country - and within this force area - of Secured Car Parks, have shown that car crime is significantly reduced. We therefore welcome this initiative at the Airport."
