Building the West London tram between Uxbridge and Shepherds Bush is supported by a clear majority of West Londoners a new survey has shown.
A recent survey commissioned by Transport for London of a cross section of people questioned in West London along the route shows that 56 percent support building the new tram with 30 percent not in favour.
The proposed tram will provide faster and more reliable public transport in this heavily congested area of London as well as delivering environmental and social benefits.
Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London, said:
“This poll shows that the majority of people in West London want to see this tram built because West London desperately needs better public transport. We will continue active consultation as the tram scheme is further developed to ensure that the concerns of local residents are fully addressed."
The West London tram scheme will run from Uxbridge to Shepherds Bush via Acton, Ealing, Hanwell and Southall town centres. The route, which is expected to be completed by 2009, will carry 50 million passengers a year and cost approximately £425 million.
Tim Jones, West London Tram Project Director said:
'The response from the poll is encouraging and we anticipate increased awareness and support as we consult. A wide-ranging consultation process has begun across the West London corridor, which has already captured suggestions from local people which is influencing the design. Local people's views are important as we consider environmental, engineering and traffic impacts'
