Pay before you board a bus

Source: http://www.tfl.gov.uk , ,

From 23 August you will need to pay before you board your bus in central London.

This will significantly speed up journey times for everyone, because, although drivers will still check tickets and passes, there will no longer be queues to pay the driver. Just show him your ticket as you board the front of the bus.

Journey to the centre of London

  • Initially, only buses serving stops within the roughly bounded by Paddington, Kings Cross, Waterloo and Victoria areas will be "pay before you board"
  • The stops will be really easy to spot – they will have a bright yellow panel saying ‘Buy tickets before boarding’

There are two ways to pay before you board!

1. Ticket machines at bus stops

  • There are ticket machines at every bus stop within the pre-pay area
  • The new ticket machines are very simple to use and sell Adult and Child single tickets as well as One Day Bus Passes
  • You’ll need the exact money (as they don’t give change)
  • They take £2, £1, 50p, 20p, 10p and 5p coins.
  • If your bus currently has a conductor, you can choose whether to pay on board or purchase a ticket beforehand as it does not delay the journey.
2. Ticket retailers - more information
  • Travelcards, Bus Passes and Savers can be purchased wherever you see this sign, and at London Underground stations (see table below for details).
  • There are over 3,200 local retailers in London
  • You can find your local outlets on this website by clicking on the following link - Local ticket outlets
