Canary Wharf DLR station has won a national award from the Secure Stations scheme, to mark its safe and secure management by Serco Docklands Limited.
The Secure Stations award reflects the high standards reached at Canary Wharf DLR, in the station’s management, design, security and passenger safety. It is one of few unmanned stations to have met the high standards necessary to win this award. The scheme is managed by the Department for Transport (DfT) in partnership with the British Transport Police (BTP) and crime prevention charity Crime Concern.
To win the award, Serco Docklands worked hard with British Transport Police to meet high security standards. Security features and procedures that impressed the judges include:
-
A CCTV system covering the entire station and monitored at all times.
-
The provision of emergency alarms on all six platforms
-
DLR Supervisor and Police patrols during off peak hours including late at night.
-
The training of all DLR staff in Conflict Avoidance.
-
The placement of clear maps to help passengers with their onward journeys.
A survey of Canary Wharf DLR customers was part of the assessment process and revealed the crime rate ratio to be low and the management of the station excellent.
Neil McLean, Managing Director of Serco Docklands, operator of the DLR, said, “We are proud of this award as it reinforces our assurance to passengers and staff that their safety and security are our top priority. We are working towards Secure Station awards for every DLR station and hope to announce two more soon¨
A plaque to celebrate the Secure Station accreditation was revealed at Canary Wharf on Monday 8 December and Jim Fitzpatrick, MP for Tower Hamlets, was on site to offer his congratulations. He said “This is a great achievement for DLR and an important step in assuring passengers of their safety whilst travelling. ¨
