London Buses today received a national award in recognition of its major service improvements over the last four years.
Transport for London received the Beacon Scheme Award in the category ‘better local public transport’ for the service provided by London Buses. The service has recently seen increased patronage, improved accessibility, enhanced service quality and increased customer satisfaction.
The Beacon Scheme is run by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and was set up to reward excellence within local government, recognising organisations that set the benchmarks within their field.
Mayor of London Ken Livingstone said of the award:
“This award is recognition that our investment in London's bus network over the last four years has been well spent, resulting in a much improved service for Londoners that is now held up by the Government as an example to others.”
Peter Hendy, TfL’s Managing Director of Surface Transport said today:
“We are delighted that the hard work and investment of TfL and London’s bus operators has been recognised. The award has been granted in recognition of the service improvements leading to increased customer satisfaction since TfL was set up. This success is due, to the comittment of the Mayor to service improvement, and to the financial support provided by central government since 2000. In order for us to continue to deliver, we need government support.”
Local Government Minister Nick Raynsford said:
“The Beacons selected today are shining examples of how excellent services can have real impact and make a real difference to peoples’ lives.
“The new Beacons will be working actively with the Improvement and Development Agency to help other authorities learn from their experience so that authorities across the country might provide services that meet the same standards of excellence.”
