Bus passengers are spending as much money in London’s town centres as car drivers, an independent report commissioned by Transport for London reveals today.
The report by research agency Accent Marketing and Research, sought to find out how much and how bus passengers contribute to the economic health of town centres. Over 3000 town centre users were interviewed in 11 locations across the capital. View the Town Centres Survey report
The results of the report showed:
-
Buses are the most popular form of transport into town centres- just over a third of visitors arrive by bus despite the fact half had access to a car;
-
Bus passengers spend matches the amount spent by car users;
-
Quality of townscape is as important as the diversity of retail outlets in attracting shoppers;
-
People use buses because of the cost, the ease and convenience and the lack of alternatives;
-
And visitors to town centres supported bus priority measures; four in five supported stricter enforcement of illegal parking in bus lanes.
Transport for London, Managing Director of Surface Transport, Peter Hendy said:
“These are fantastic results, the research dispels the myth that bus passengers have lower incomes and are less able to contribute to towns’ economic growth. This together with the fact that many new passengers to buses are from social demographic AB means the rejuvenation of the bus network is a success and town centres all over the capital are benefiting from this investment.”
