Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, July 12, 2005 – Today the Transport Ticketing Authority (TTA) of Melbourne, Australia, has announced it will order the design, installation and operation of a highly innovative public transport fare collection system for the state of Victoria. The contract has been awarded to Keane Australia Micropayment Consortium Pty Ltd (Kamco). Ascom is the supplier of the fare collection system to Kamco. The total project volume amounts to 494 million AUD, equivalent to approximately 480 million CHF, with Ascom’s portion of the contract valued at approx. 120 million CHF. This award further strengthens Ascom’s leading position as a global supplier of large-scale multi-modal fare collection systems with successful installations across the globe.
This state-of-the-art ticketing solution will support Victoria’s extensive public transport system of 270 railway stations, 480 trams and 1650 buses that services more than 410 million journeys each year. In 2007, the new ticketing solution will go live, enabling travellers to access all modes of public transport throughout metropolitan Melbourne, the regional train and the bus lines using a single plastic smartcard.
This new multi-modal fare collection system for the Victorian Transport Ticketing Authority, delivered under the prime responsibility of main contractor Keane Australia Micropayment Consortium Pty Ltd, comprises world class fare collection devices, a proven and highly scaleable management system which allows full monitoring, controlling and maintenance of all components, as well as the mission-critical back-end financial system for transaction processing and financial clearing.
This award from the Transport Ticketing Authority (TTA) of the State of Victoria underscores Ascom Transport Revenue’s leading position as a fare collection systems integrator for large, highly complex projects including large-scale system rollouts. In this capacity, Ascom will deliver and support the device management system, 4,745 ticket vending, add value and controller devices, as well as 13,377 validators for the Victoria project. The initial system installation by Ascom for the project is valued at approx. 95 million CHF, while the subsequent maintenance and support from 2009 to 2017 to be provided by Ascom is valued at another approx. 25 million CHF.
