The Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) welcomes the publication of the draft North West Route Utilisation Strategy (NW RUS) issued today by Network Rail.
The North West region has seen rapid growth in recent years on many inter-urban routes and this presents the industry with real challenges and opportunities.
ATOC regards the draft strategy as an important part of ensuring that the railways meet the rapidly increasing demand for rail travel by actually growing the railway where it’s most needed.
Russ Cunningham, ATOC’s Head of Planning said: “This strategy is a positive springboard for growth and we welcome the wide consultation of all regional stakeholders as well as train and freight operators.
“We are particularly pleased to note that the consultation includes options for longer trains, more rolling stock and electrification between the two key cities of Liverpool and Manchester.
“We look forward to helping to build the business case for investment with Network Rail, local Passenger Transport Executives and stakeholders.
The strategy considers a wide range of railway issues affecting a variety of urban and rural centres. In order for the North West of England to further contribute to the UK economy there needs to be a rolling programme of modest investment which compliments the West Coast Main Line and the Trans Pennine routes which have seen investment in recent years.
