8/1/2003 Delta tests RFID technology Source:http://www.eyefortransport.com, Source date: Delta Air Lines is to test the use of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to track air cargo. The airline plans to test RFID on selected flights from Jacksonville through its Atlanta hub this fall, in coordination with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). The RFID technology will use radio signals, broadcast from readers, to send and receive information from programmable memory stored on a small chip embedded in the passenger's bag tag. The unique information will provide Delta with enhanced tracking capabilities for passenger luggage and air cargo shipments.
The 30-day test will involve more than 40,000 900MHz disposable tags provided by Matrics and SCS Corporation and will be conducted in coordination with the TSA. Other partners in the test include FKI Logistex, Moore Wallace Inc. and the Jacksonville Airport Authority.
