Transport for London has been short listed for two Bus Industry awards for innovation and accessibility. The event will take place on Wednesday 5th November 2003 at the London Hilton.

We are short listed for the following:

Accessibility Award - The Out & About Guide enables people with learning disabilities to travel independently by bus

This is a new travel guide aimed to make travel around the capital easier for people with learning disabilities. The Out and About Guide provides step-by-step information about travelling on public transport, from preparing to go out to making your journey. The guide advises on road skills, personal safety, what to do if things go wrong and how to make a journey by bus, taxi and other forms of public transport.

Innovation Award - Solar powered illumination bus stops

Bus stops are not normally lit by mains supply due to the cost of mains connection. Transport for London has experimented with the use of solar energy in various locations. Solar power has been used to light the timetable so information can be seen in the dark; to illuminate the bus stop; and to enhance the bus stop environment for passengers safety and security.

Head of operations at London Buses Mike Weston said:

“We are delighted to be short listed for such highly acclaimed awards. This shows that TfL is at the cutting edge when it comes to providing an accessible bus service. The Mayor’s transport strategy places buses at the heart of London and our innovations help encourage people to get on board our services”.
