2/1/2005 Tube passengers pledge over £230,000 for DEC appeal Source:http://www.tfl.gov.uk, Source date: Tube passengers showed enormous generosity last week, helping London Underground raise over £230,000 for the survivors of the Asian Tsunami disaster. The donations, which will be handed to the Disaster Emergency Committee (DEC), were made at 71 Tube stations across the network. Nigel Holness, Service Director at London Underground who co-ordinated the collection, said: "Thank you to all the passengers who donated to the appeal, your generosity has been overwhelming. Special thanks must also be extended to the co-ordination team and 200-plus staff from London Underground and across TfL who helped with the collection. Their initiative, dedication and energy helped raise a tremendous sum. “This money will play its part in helping the people affected by this tragedy and our thoughts are with them.” TfL urges all Londoners to continue to support the appeal by calling 0870 60 60 900, or visiting www.dec.org.uk
Editor’s notes In just 12 days the DEC appeal has raised an incredible £100 million from the British public. TfL has worked with Viacom - the company responsible for advertising on the network - to make space available to publicise the DEC appeal. From 17 Jan, advertising across 2000 sites on the TfL Tube and bus network will carry the DEC’s phone number and website address.
Wednesday’s three-minute silence was observed across the transport network, with announcements on the Tube and buses pulling over where it was safe to do so to allow passengers and staff to pay their respects
