Nigel Holness, Service Director at London Underground who co-ordinated the collection, said: "Thank you to all the passengers who donated to the appeal, your generosity has been overwhelming. Special thanks must also be extended to the co-ordination team and 200-plus staff from London Underground and across TfL who helped with the collection. Their initiative, dedication and energy helped raise a tremendous sum.

“This money will play its part in helping the people affected by this tragedy and our thoughts are with them.”

The DEC is an umbrella body for UK charities, including names such as the British Red Cross and Oxfam, who are in the front line of the relief effort, providing clean water, food and shelter to the survivors.

In just 12 days the DEC appeal has raised an incredible £100 million from the British public.

TfL has worked with Viacom - the company responsible for advertising on the network - to make space available to publicise the DEC appeal. From 17 Jan, advertising across 2000 sites on the TfL Tube and bus network will carry the DEC’s phone number and website address.
