Comet has awarded a nationwide contract to Wincanton to provide clearing services for end of life electrical goods across Comet's home delivery platforms. The contract builds on Wincanton's relationship with Comet and the successful management of two of the electrical retailer's distribution centres in Westbury, Wiltshire and Harlow, Essex.

Wincanton will operate six regional centres for sortation and grading of the goods. Where possible, items will be refurbished for re-use in the community by social enterprise partners Renew, Remploy and CREATE UK.

Phil Heaton, head of services for Comet said: “Wincanton is able to provide a one-stop solution to meet our WEEE collection needs, as well as the right specialist experience to extract maximum value from the end-of-life equipment.”

End of life fridges will be taken to Wincanton's fridge processing facility in Billingham, which has the ability to process up to 400,000 units each year and is one of the leading such plants in the UK. Televisions will be recycled in accordance with the expected requirements under the WEEE Directive. The remaining items will then be recycled at local recycling facilities
