USPS's Financials Through Feb. 28: Revenue Up, Expenses Down, Volume Down 0.1%

For the US Postal Service’s fiscal 2006 year to date (YTD) (October 1, 2005 through February 28, 2006), total revenue was $30.5 billion, which was $96.6 million better than planned budget. Total expenses of $29.2 billion was $117.0 million under plan.

YTD net income before escrow allocation was $1.29 billion, which was $30.4 million under plan; however, net gain after escrow allocation was $47.5 million.

For the year to date, total mail volume (experienced 0.1 percent growth. Broken down by class:

  • First-Class volume was down 1.5 percent,
  • Standard Mail was up 1.4 percent,
  • Priority Mail was up 6.9 percent,
  • Express Mail was up 4.8 percent,
  • Periodicals was down 1.2 percent,
  • Package Services was up 3.8 percent,
  • International was down 2.4 percent.
