Russia Approves Payphone Smart Card

Russia’s interdepartmental commission on smart cards has approved a plan for a national payphone card and asked the Communications Ministry to draft a program by June 30, 2002 to develop and introduce such a card, the ministry reported in its website.
The commission also recommended that this program be included as an independent sub-program in the federal Electronic Russia program, which is to be implemented from 2002 until 2010.
The ministry said that, in order to implement the plan, interested parties would have to agree on what regulatory and technical documentation would have to be drafted and by what deadline, as well as determine what amount of funding will be needed for this work and where it will come from.
