New 2D Bar Codes Hold More Data

Datastrip Inc., Exton, Pa., has introduced a new two-dimensional bar code symbology the company says will hold twice as much data as other systems in a third of the space. The increased data capacity in 2D Superscript allows users to integrate information such as biometrics, photographs and text in one magnetic-stripe-sized bar code.

"Datastrip offers an inexpensive solution that raises the bar for providing security within an ID card," said Bob Mann, president of Tamperproof ID, a Miami-based integrator specializing in identification projects. "Their system makes it possible to hold a large volume of information on a card and provide a highly tamper-resistant identity document without adding any cost to the card itself."

The Republic of Yemen is using the technology to combine photographs and fingerprints on more than 5 million national ID cards.

Identity verification of a 2D Superscript card can be accomplished on or off line with Datastrip's DS Verify 2D, a hand-held bar code/smart card reader capable of decoding text, fingerprints and photographs.
