Sorting Machines Damaging Mail

Postal officials revealed Wednesday that new flat-sorting machines are damaging some flat mail. The Automated Flat Sorting Machine (ASFM) 100 is called the "intelligent" flat sorting machine since it can interpret hard-to-read addresses and sort three times as fast as previous models, up to 15,000 per hour.
The USPS recently completed the deployment of 534 ASFM 100's nationwide and has found the new machines are damaging a very small percentage of flat mail. The machines manufacturer, Northrop Grumman, is testing a new feeding system with promising results. And the USPS has issued a training video to its operators, which includes steps to minimize damage to mail.
