10/1/2002 U.S. Customs Unlikely To Complete Its Next Generation Computer System Due To Lack Of Funding Source:www.eyefortransport.com , Source date: The Automated Commercial Environment (ACE) system is on target to be completed in five years, Douglas Browning, Customs Deputy Commissioner told the U.S. Maritime Security Expo. In order to complete the system a year earlier, Customs needed an additional $100 million from Congress which Browning said is not a likelihood at this time. Obtaining the money "is a difficult project in Washington and it may not materialize," Browning said, "though we are still trying." Separately, he said that Customs has made the case that the proposed Department of Homeland Security, of which Customs will be a part, will require a robust information platform and that development of ACE is making the most progress.
"ACE is clearly on their radar scope," he said. "It is much further along than other systems."
