Intermec Technologies Corp. today introduced a global program to license its Intellitag® radio frequency identification technology. According to the terms of the new program, Intermec will offer non-exclusive royalty bearing licensing of pertinent RFID intellectual property pertaining to its application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) "chips," inlays (inserts), transponders (tags), and fixed and portable interrogators (readers or base stations), all components of an RFID system. Customers who complete license agreements with Intermec before June 1, 2003, will receive royalty incentives. Early adopters who complete agreements before Feb. 28, 2003, will be granted permanently reduced royalty rates. "Intermec holds more than 115 RFID patents, one of the industry s strongest, most comprehensive portfolios of RFID intellectual property," said Intermec Vice President Richard Mahany, Product Development. "Through licensing, we can encourage and accelerate market adoption proven RFID technologies that already meet leading global standards." "Standards provide a common definition for technology and its use by adopting customers," said Intermec Director Michael Guillory, Industry Relations. "This foundation broadens the market for technology providers, encouraging global competition in ways that lead to reduced price and risk for end users. Such a common framework facilitates applications development by encouraging interoperability and by reducing customization so typical of proprietary technologies." The Intermec technology behind Intellitag supports all relevant adopted and emerging national and international standards including: ISO/IEC SC 31/WG 4, including ISO/IEC 18000 Part 6 (UHF) Item Management and ISO/IEC 18000 Part 4, Mode 1 (2450 MHz); ISO TC 104 Freight Containers, including ISO 18185 Electronic Seal Tags and ISO 22389 RFID Read/Write for Containers; ISO TC 122 Packaging; EAN.UCC Global Tag; ANSI INCITS T6, including ANS INCITS 256.2001; ANSI MH10/SC8 Material Handling, including ANS MH10.8.4:2002 RFID for Reusable Containers; and AIAG Automotive Industry Action Group, including AIAG B-11 Tire and Wheel Identification.
