Marks & Spencer saw off strong competition at 'The Sammies' - the British Sandwich Industry Awards - last night, winning two categories - 'Sandwich Retailer of the Year 2003' for the second year running and 'Workplace Sandwich Supplier of the Year Award' for its Lunchtogo service.
The leading food retailer was presented with the 'Sandwich Retailer of the Year' award for its high quality and innovative sandwich range. Marks & Spencer has now won this award three times in the past four years, demonstrating the range's consistent appeal and excellence. Marks & Spencer retained its position as market leaders throughout 2002 and recorded a growth of nearly 6%, despite increased competition and a general decline in the pre-packed sandwich market (TNS Sandwich Track).
Marks & Spencer was also awarded 'Workplace Sandwich Supplier of the Year' for the wide variety of 'ready to eat' food, snacks, fruit and drinks available to order online or through selected stores for delivery direct to offices via its Lunchtogo service.
'The Sammies' are one of the sandwich industry's premier events rewarding excellence to innovative, quality products available through food retailers and supermarkets. The panel of judges, made up of a range of food industry experts, writers and chefs, tasted sandwiches from a wide range of retailers.
Annabel Ovenstone, Sandwich Product Developer at Marks & Spencer comments: "Winning these awards recognises the commitment our dedicated team of food experts has to providing our customers with the best range of sandwiches on the high street. With the success of our Lunchtogo service and Simply Food stores we have made it even easier for our customers to enjoy our sandwiches. We are very proud to gain recognition for the work we do developing new and exciting sandwiches, using the very best quality ingredients, sourced from around the world".
