A charity that takes surplus food from major retailers and passes it to hungry people on the streets has received a lottery grant.
Firms such as Marks and Spencer, Sainsbury's and the Co-Op distribute unwanted itmes to Fareshare, who ensure that hostels and day centres are able to feed the homeless.
Established in 1994 by Crisis, Fareshare has received nearly £700,000 in a special grant to expand its service across the country.
It will set up large-scale central depots and buy a fleet of vans to ship out the food.
Alex Green, their Marketing and Fundraising Director, said:
"Hundreds more community organisations will now receive our support, and thousands more of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people across the country will have access to regular, quality food."
