Sainsbury’s is aiming to raise an additional £1 million for Comic Relief through the launch of an own label scratchcard, which will be available in stores and petrol stations nationwide from today. Developed in conjunction with Sportech plc, the home gaming company, the cards will be sold for six months, as a trial.
This national own-label scratchcard game, a first for a UK supermarket, will be available at a cost of £1 each with 20 pence from each sale going direct to Comic Relief. On average one in five customers stands a chance of winning a cash prize with a top prize of £75,000.
Sara Weller, Assistant Managing Director Sainsbury’s said; “During the last Comic Relief campaign our customers and colleagues raised over £4.5 million, making us the biggest single donor. The campaign also increased the number of customer visits to our stores. We know that customers trust the Sainsbury's brand and we believe that an innovative product like this will capture their imagination as well as further strengthening our own label offering."
Colin McGill, Chief Executive of Sportech plc, said: “We are delivering on our strategy of identifying new channels of distribution and product innovation, building upon our successful Littlewoods gaming and betting portfolio. We will work with Sainsbury’s to deliver a range of scratchcards that build on its brand values as well as generating additional cash for Comic Relief.”
Kevin Cahill, Chief Executive of Comic Relief said: “Sainsbury’s has been our sponsor for four years now and is a fantastic partner. We are so pleased that with the new scratchcards they will be supporting us even more.”
