Intermec Gateway with G4000 Server Appliance connects wide range of Intermec wireless networks, applications

Source: , ,

Intermec Technologies Corp. today announced two new computer network communications tools based on Microsoft's Windows 2000 Server with the Server Appliance Kit (SAK). The new Intermec Gateway and G4000 Server Appliance allow networks running a wide range of Intermec mobile computers and other hardware to move seamlessly to wireless device integration. They are the first products built with the Windows 2000 Server operating system with SAK to be specifically developed for industrial, warehousing, field service, retail and transportation markets.

The Intermec Gateway and G4000 Server Appliance system, which includes a full range of value-add services for network connections, data collection applications and system management activities, provides complete integration across all of Intermec's product lines. It lowers the total cost of wireless LAN ownership with its broad array of management capabilities, including Web-based remote management, DHCP, DNS, device discovery, FTP, Telnet and Remote Desktop features.

The Intermec Gateway allows customers using a variety of different radio systems, from 900 MHz to 2.4 GHz Open-Air, or 802.11b, to connect to the same host. In addition, it allows customers using Intermec's popular legacy communications protocols to communicate easily with TCP/IP-based wireless networks.

One of the system's most important benefits is its wireless connection reliability, said Swaran Arneja, Intermec product manager. "When you use this system, we guarantee delivery of data," he said. "You will not lose your data. Using this system will enhance your network reliability and reduce your frustration."

"We re excited that Intermec is delivering the G4000 Server Appliance using Windows 2000 with the Server Appliance Kit," said Scott Horn, director of marketing for the Embedded and Appliance Platforms Group at Microsoft. "Intermec is able to deliver a highly manageable solution while providing wireless connectivity and ensuring seamless integration into existing infrastructures."

G4000 Server Appliance

The G4000 Server Appliance is a hardware product that can be used to host different Intermec applications such as Intermec Gateway and dcBrowser Gateway software. It includes the Microsoft Windows 2000 operating system with the SAK. The platform supports software as well as system configuration updates via a local console or through a remote browser.

The server has an industrial-grade backplane motherboard featuring Ethernet and video on board, providing more stability in a slim 2U rack mountable industrial chassis. It uses an open systems design to give users the flexibility to customize their networks for today s environment while allowing easy migration to future wireless LANs.

Intermec Gateway

The Intermec Gateway improves system performance by providing advanced wireless networking techniques to ensure faster throughput and response time for users working in large complex wireless environments. This is a significant benefit in locations with high terminal concentrations where slow response can cause lowered productivity and increased user frustration.

The Intermec Gateway provides standards-based wireless connectivity to a wide range of networks and applications. It supports wireless networks based on the 900 MHz, 2.4 GHz OpenAir, and IEEE 802.11 standards. The gateway also eliminates the need for TCP/IP stacks for each handheld, reducing overall system cost. Its automated fallback feature ensures that mission critical applications continue to operate when essential components are isolated, keeping the enterprise automatic data collection systems up and running. The G4000 Server and Intermec Gateway will be available early in 2003.
