Exel has launched a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) trial for Selfridges, based from the Company's Hams Hall National Distribution Centre (NDC), West Midlands.
The RFID will track the inbound and outbound movements of 120 food temperature-controlled containers, in 20 vehicles. When the containers and vehicles are close to the loading bays, RFID readers and antennae read the tags and automatically update Exel's in-house software.
“RFID has generated widespread interest amongst supply chain professionals,” said Paul Richardson, Exel’s Business Director, Retail Services – Europe. “We hope that its future application will help Selfridges to improve stock visibility, increase security and track dispatch and delivery processes. Ultimately, RFID could provide automated, real-time command and control of the fleet.”
"We hope that these trials will unlock the real value of RFID for customers, suppliers and the industry at large," said Selfridges Buying & Merchandise Director, David Riddiford.
