Intermec Technologies Corp. today announced it
will host a government-focused RFID educational summit March 18, 2004, in
Arlington, Virginia, designed specifically for government suppliers. The educational
session will address the most significant RFID (radio frequency identification)
issues suppliers face today: establishing the value of what RFID can
provide, understanding various specifications behind RFID tag and reader technology
and becoming familiar with applications and standards that will prepare government
suppliers for RFID programs. In addition, Gary Orem, team leader for
information technology at the Social Security Administration, will present
a real-world RFID implementation case study.
The program, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., will focus on central
RFID issues, including a technology overview, a comparison of frequencies
and distances, global regulations and requirements, site surveys, tag selection
and mounting, system integration and standard updates. In addition, Intermec
will present government RFID implementation case studies, including Fort McPherson’s
RFID base access security program and the NEXUS RFID-powered U.S. border-crossing
program.
“Government suppliers want the facts about RFID,
pure and simple,” said Intermec Vice President Scott Medford. “This unbiased
educational seminar gives attendees the ability to separate fact from fiction
without fear of a sales pitch, helping them select and implement RFID technology
that will provide the most value to their supply chain.”
RFID, a complement to current bar code-based tracking
systems, allows companies to automatically track inventory throughout an entire
supply chain. Intermec RFID already is at work throughout the world, deployed
in wide-ranging applications that include inventory and asset management,
access control, compliance tracking, and personnel and vehicle identification.
