With a digital colour display that's 20% larger than most other hand held mobile computers—and a market-leading battery capacity of up to 10 hours before it needs recharging, the new Intermec 700 Colour Pocket PC 2002 hand held wireless computer introduced this week offers the promise of becoming a key tool for mobile workers in industrial, retail and remote locations.
The 700 Pocket PC—designed for Windows applications—-is an upgrade over the flexibility and functionality of Intermec Technologies Corp.'s one-year-old black-and-white 700 series, in part because of the power and speed of Intel Corp.'s new X-scale PXA250 processor.
The 700 Pocket PC also has a reflective TFT display that works under all lighting conditions, (including daylight) and integrates up to three communications options—wide area, local and BlueTooth—in a single device. "[It's] a mobile solution that will help [customers] solve bring business problems [and] access critical information anytime, anywhere—even in the most extreme remote and mobile environments," says Juha Christensen, corporate vice president of Microsoft Corp.'s Mobility Group.
The 700 color, with Microsoft software and radio and scanner options built-in, can withstand multiple five-foot drops to concrete and is sealed against rain and dust to IP 64 standards.
It is available with linear imaging or laser scanning technologies. The 2D-imager option reads both two-dimensional matrix codes, as well as omni directional bar codes. The 2D image also can take photographs for applications such as proof of delivery, market surveys or field inspections. Linear 1D and PDF417 laser scanners complete the scanning lineup.
The 700 Color comes with a 14.4 watt-hour lithium-ion battery and a built in-Flash ROM folder that allows permanent storage of applications, drivers and start-up files on non-volatile flash memory.
