By day it looks like a football, by night an illuminated world and is made out of, amongst other things, 60 tonnes of steel - which needs moving. The Football Globe 2006 FIFA World Cup will tour Germany for 3 years until the World Cup starts, in Germany, in 2006. The Globe will be transported by DHL, the express and logistics service provider of Deutsche Post World Net.
On 12th September 2003, exactly 1000 days before the World Cup begins, the multimedia Globe will be opened, in Berlin, under the direction of André Heller. DHL's challenge of moving the Globe will begin in early November. That's when the extraordinary structure will be dismantled in Berlin and re-constructed in Frankfurt during the following weeks. The reconstruction and dismantling of the structure alone takes in each location (the twelve World Cup venues) around a month to complete, during which DHL will transport the respective parts to the next location as required. Along with the 60 tonnes of steel, which will fill six DHL trucks, the 20 metre high Globe consists of, amongst other things, 4.8 km of cables, 20 000 television screens, 40 loudspeaker systems and 20 projectors. The structure looks like a classic football, made up of 20 hexagons and 12 pentagons. DHL is a presenting partner in the project and contributes with its logistical expertise in seeing that the "Kick Off" at the twelve World Cup venues can start on time.
