DMA tackles changes to legislative landscape and ongoing data protection confusion at its 5th Annual Data Protection Conference

Source: http://www.dma.org.uk , ,

The DMA will be holding its fifth Annual Data Protection Conference on 18 March 2004 at the Queen Elizabeth Conference Centre, Westminster, London.

After a year of dramatic changes to the legislative landscape for the dm industry, and growing consumer awareness of their data protection rights, the DMA is holding its fifth Annual Data Protection Conference to provide solid factual information on data protection issues and their implications for direct marketing activity.

The keynote address will once again be given by the Information Commissioner, Richard Thomas. Following his first year in office, he will discuss his experiences over the past fifteen months and outline the Information Commissioner's (ICOs) new strategic plan and the ICO's citizen's education programme. In addition, delegates will be guided through the key points of the new Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations that came into effect at the end of last year, detailing the impact this legislation now has on e-marketing campaigns.

"The 5th DMA Annual Data Protection Conference brings together a team of expert speakers, specialising in specific areas of data protection and compliance," commented Caroline Roberts, Director of Public and Legal Affairs at the DMA. "This key DMA event addresses the uncertainty surrounding the application of the new Regulations relating to e-mail and SMS marketing and is a must for anyone seeking clarification on the numerous and contentious issues surrounding data protection."

To enable delegates to gain an in-depth understanding of a particular area of data application, the DMA has provided a choice of four breakout seminar sessions covering international direct marketing, monitoring of employees, data protection implications for sales promotions and how to access data under the Freedom of Information Act. Also being held is a Data Protection Refresher Breakfast for those new to the area, or for delegates who wish to brush up on their knowledge and understanding of the Data Protection Act 1998.

About the Direct Marketing Association (UK) Ltd (DMA)

The DMA UK is the largest trade association in the marketing communications sector, with almost 900 corporate members. The DMA's mission is to maximise value for members, whilst maintaining and enhancing consumer trust and confidence in the direct marketing industry.

To assist, the DMA administers a portfolio of Preference Services that allow consumers to register their contact details, free of charge, should they choose to reduce the amount of direct marketing approaches they receive via mail, telephone, fax and email.

DMA members benefit from added protection, intelligence and growth, which together we call the Power of Association. Within these three areas, DMA member services include government lobbying, free legal advice, training & development, representation on DMA Councils, networking opportunities, regular updates of current dm issues/legislation, research, use of the DMA logo, promotion of member companies and discounts on a range of dm products/services.

Over £11.85 billion was spent on direct marketing activity in 2002, resulting in over £60 billion worth of sales. This makes direct marketing one of the top ten industries in the UK.
