DMA launches its first e-learning initiative

Source: http://www.dma.org.uk , ,

The DMA announces new online learning initiative to promote industry best practice and raise awareness of the ever-changing legislative landscape. The first in a series of e-learning programmes will focus on the new Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003, governing email and SMS marketing. (For further information about the Regulations please see Notes to Editors at the end of this press release.)

This masterclass has been developed in conjunction with e-learning specialists Knowledge=Power and is an interactive distance learning course designed to ensure that people understand the principles surrounding the new guidelines and stay within the law. At the end of the course users can print off a certificate to demonstrate that they have passed the training programme.

By subscribing to this course, users can log on to a virtual Learning World( which contains:

  • The theory and practice of the new regulations
  • An engaging game to test their understanding of the regulations
  • A more formal exam to test participants on practical issues surrounding the regulations
  • A wealth of library materials and links to relevant websites for more detailed information

Commenting on the importance of this course, Mike Barnes, DMA Director of Marketing and Business Development commented, "Email Marketing is now an extremely significant marketing tool and use of this medium has increased significantly over the last few years. However, there is a stark need to effectively communicate the impact and detail of these new Regulations and this online masterclass will play a vital role in this education process. Remote access also means convenience and cost savings for direct marketing companies."

Joanne Holland, Chairman of Knowledge=Power, said, "Privacy and electronic communications is currently one of the most hotly debated topics in direct marketing, and there is a pressing need for knowledge on the practical implications of the legislation. This new Knowledge=Power learning world combines validated learning techniques with the most up to date interactive web-based systems to deliver an exciting, engaging and effective e-learning experience."

For DMA members the course costs £295 + VAT annually for up to five users and £10 + VAT per user thereafter. For non-members the course costs £395 + VAT annually for up to five users and £15 + VAT per user thereafter. This fee allows users to access the masterclass as many times as required within their annual subscription.

About the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003

The final version of the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003 (the Regulations) came into force on 11 December 2003. The Regulations implement the Privacy and Electronic Communications Directive, which was adopted by the European Union in July 2002.

About the Direct Marketing Association (UK) Ltd (DMA)

The DMA UK is the largest trade association in the marketing communications sector, with almost 900 corporate members. The DMA's mission is to maximise value for members, whilst maintaining and enhancing consumer trust and confidence in the direct marketing industry.

To assist, the DMA administers a portfolio of Preference Services that allow consumers to register their contact details, free of charge, should they choose to reduce the amount of direct marketing approaches they receive via mail, telephone, fax and email.

DMA members benefit from added protection, intelligence and growth, which together we call the Power of Association. Within these three areas, DMA member services include government lobbying, free legal advice, training & development, representation on DMA Councils, networking opportunities, regular updates of current dm issues/legislation, research, use of the DMA logo, promotion of member companies and discounts on a range of dm products/services.

Over £11.85 billion was spent on direct marketing activity in 2002, resulting in over £60 billion worth of sales. This makes direct marketing one of the top ten industries in the UK.
