Following the establishment of a Telephone Preference Service for corporate businesses in June 2004, speculation surrounding the number of companies that would register and the profile of these companies has continued to grow. Eight months on since the creation of this service, the DMA has produced findings from the first research conducted into the CTPS, to answer such questions and provide feedback to the telemarketing industry.
The results show that the majority of companies registering on the Corporate TPS are small businesses. There are currently 275,000 numbers registered on the CTPS. Of the registrants surveyed, 54% of them were from companies which had between one and nine employees, and companies with between 10 to 49 employees accounted for 29% of registrants. The vast majority of companies (76%) are only registering one or two numbers and those that had registered are unsympathetic to using the telephone as a sales and marketing channel with only 15% of them using the telephone to make such calls.
Tessa Kelly, DMA Director of Compliance Operations commented, "The profile of the businesses registered on the Corporate Telephone Preference Service appears to match those that had lobbied to extend the protection already available to sole traders and partnerships and in the majority of cases it has been either company Directors or Managers registering. The findings from this research show that in general, companies are not making uninformed decisions when registering with the CTPS and that despite some concerns from the industry that the introduction of a Corporate Telephone Preference Service would significantly hinder business to business telemarketing, this is not the case. "
The research was conducted online and emailed to a random selection of CTPS registrants, over 1,000 people responded to the survey, which asked 25 qualitative and quantitative questions. The results of this research also showed that although there was a wide spread of business types registering with the CTPS, there was a predominance in IT/computing, manufacturing, construction, retail, banking/finance and engineering.
