Following the launch of the DMA’s environmental campaign with the Woodland Trust in August, the actions taken by the direct marketing industry has resulted in the DMA achieving a 10th of its tree planting target.
As part of its long term environmental commitments to Government the DMA launched its third environmental campaign earlier this year in partnership with the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity, the Woodland Trust. This campaign urges the industry to help the DMA meet its environmental targets and for every action a company takes to help achieve these targets the DMA has pledged to plant a specific number of trees in native woodland.
David Robottom, DMA Director of Postal Affairs and Industry Development commented, “The feedback we’ve had from the industry for this campaign has been extremely encouraging but we’ve still got a long way to go to meet our target of 10,000 trees by spring 2006. Actions that will enable us to achieve this goal range from using suppression files to ordering environmentally friendly paper so it really is possible for every organisation involved in dm to take part in this campaign.”
Jason Dyer of the Woodland Trust said: “This is a very encouraging start to the DMA’s campaign and we are well on our way to reaching the 10,000 target. It is good news for the UK’s native woodland.”
Companies can enter the actions they carry out, both on a company-wide basis and in specific campaigns, on www.treesforaction.org.uk and as the number of trees planted increases the homepage treeometer will turn green.
Every company that takes part will receive confirmation of the number of trees they have planted and this information will be displayed on the campaign website. Campaign supporters banners are also available to organisations that have taken part in this campaign to put on their websites.
Commenting on the campaigns progress, Emma Chablo Marketing Director of smartFOCUS and one of the campaigns sponsors said, “smartFOCUS is encouraged by this early achievement but there is a great deal more commitment needed from the industry as a whole to improve our customer targeting, reduce wastage and to inform the DMA about the positive actions being taken to deliver more trees. smartFOCUS continues to support this initiative and the focus on the next big tree target.”
The DMA will be sending out a series of campaign call to action messages throughout the coming months to actively engage the industry in this challenge.
