The meetings have been arranged so that Postcomm can listen to the views of
interested parties on the future of postal services.
The meetings will take place in Birmingham, on Tuesday 16 July, and Exeter,
onTuesday 23 July.
Under the Postal Services Act 2000, Postcomm must safeguard a universal postal
service at a uniform tariff across the UK. But it is also charged with introducing
competition, and on 29 May it announced that postal services will be gradually
opened up to market forces beginning in January next year, when 30% of the letters
market will be open to competition.
In 2007 all restrictions to postal competition will be removed. Many issues
need to be resolved as the postal market unfolds.
For example:
- Is the universal service comprehensive enough - or too comprehensive?
- What sort of price control should Postcomm impose on Consignia?
- What is the best way to work out the prices that competitors should pay
Consignia so that postmen can deliver their letters?
We welcome the views of all interested parties on these and other postal matters.
The first meeting will take place on Tuesday 16 July at 10am in the Director'sLounge,
Aston Villa Football Club,
Villa Park,
Birmingham.
The second meeting will take place on Tuesday 23 July at 10am in the RoyalClarence
Hotel,
Cathedral Yard,
Exeter.
