Power Digital Card (PDC) and Samsung Strikes Again As An Industry First to Release the 128MegaByte Reduced Size MultiMediaCards

PDC and Samsung releases the industry's first 128MB RSMMC

Taking the lead in researching high-density memory cards, Power Digital Card (PDC) has recently developed to release the industry’s first 128MB Reduced Sized MultiMediaCard (RS-MMC). With the introduction of 128MB RS-MMC, mobile phone manufacturers and electronic device developers now have a wider scope to develop multimedia applications and can manufacture even more compact devices.

With the technical support of Samsung Electronics (SEC), mass production of the 128MB RS-MMC is expected in Q3 of 2003. Release of the 256MB RS-MMC and the 512MB standard MMC is expected in Q4 of 2003. By the end of the year, PDC and SEC’s product line of RS-MMC is expected to be complete with density sizes ranging from 8MB to 256MB and product line for the standard MMC is expected to be complete with density sizes ranging from 8MB to 512MB.

The coin-sized Reduced Sized MultiMediaCard (RS-MMC) has a form factor of 24mm by 18mm, approximately half the size of a standard MMC. With the use of an extender, the RS-MMC is backward compatible with devices using the standard MMC (form factor of 24mm by 32mm). Both PDC and SEC MMC/RS-MMC cards currently operate under the 2.7~3.6V range and the low voltage cards (dual 1.8V/3.3V) are expected to be available before the end of the year.

The High-Speed MMC (HS-MMC) specification is on the way to be a standard of MMCA. For the HS-MMC, burst data rate is set at 52MB per second, the fastest among flash memory cards. The MMC line supports high storage capacity and rapid transmission of still and moving pictures.

With the introduction of new digital devices equipped with a connector slot for the MMC, demand for MultiMediaCard s may exceed 100mn pieces with demand growing exponentially for the next few years. This demand is mainly boosted by mobile phones, which will lead to demands in PDAs, Digital Cameras/Camcorders, MP3 devices, Notebooks, Desktops, and other forms of electronic devices, which need external memory.
