Ericsson supplies most of the telecommunications equipment needed for the Eurovision Song Contest in Tallinn, Estonia on May 25. Estonian Telephone Company and Estonian mobile operator EMT, Gold Sponsors of the event, ordered the voice, data, and mobile systems to boost the communication capacity in the concert hall and the press center.
Ericsson has supplied and Estonian Telephone Company (ETC) installed the Ericsson MD110 voice communications system as well as the Extreme Networks-based datacom system in Saku Suurhall (Saku Arena) concert hall. The technology was specifically devised to enhance the capacity of the arena's telecom system.
Ericsson also supplied the same amount of data and voice communications equipment for the press and media center, and commentators' booths for the Eurovision Song Contest. All core systems and external connections are doubled or even tripled for emergencies to ensure a problem free TV production and smooth media coverage.
Besides enhancing the capacity of wireline networks for the high number of tourists and participants flooding in for the event, Ericsson provides extra (mobile) base stations for mobile networks, which allow boosting of voice channels in the concert hall and city center areas by 50%. In addition, Estonian mobile operator EMT will use a special technique called Half Rate which doubles the amount of voice channels in the arena, meaning mobile network capacity will be tripled for active communication during and prior to the event.
