Low cost RFID

Low cost RFID (radio frequency identification) tickets is the specialisation of the Mass Transit division of BemroseBooth. Since 1996, when we were awarded the UK's first single-source rail ticketing contract, we achieved a significant growth. The renewal of this contract in 2001, against global competition, involved the development of new products and services to meet the changing needs of the rail industry over the following five years.

We have been widening our customer base beyond UK. We now supply mass transit products - magnetic tickets, bus, coach, ferry single/return tickets, multi-ride tickets, season and concessionary tickets and associated secure and printed stock forms and stationery items - to a variety of train, light rail, ferry and bus operating companies on the global stage and to National and Regional Transit Authorities.

Technologies and associated systems are evolving at a rapid pace, particularly in relation to high-value season tickets and concessionary tickets for students and pensioners. Currently we are actively involved in developing low-cost RFID tickets that will be suitable for the more volume-based applications.

Future technology is at the forefront of our policy. We see development of low cost RFID as the next step in the evolution of mass transit fare collection technology. Consequently, we are one of the leaders in the emerging technology of 'smart' card systems and laminar electronics.

The benefits of low cost RFID vary according to the application. In mass transit, they are principally related to security, customer convenience and automated data collection. Active development over many years has dramatically reduced unit cost, which has resulted in a corresponding increase in RFID's relevance to mass transit customers. We are well positioned to exploit the forecast growth in the rapidly expanding smart technology market.

In order to drive down the cost of disposable smart cards and RFID products, we have launched a development project aimed at introducing in-house antenna production and chip placement - along with the required test and programming competencies.

With well over a century of experience, we have accumulated knowledge and expertise that makes us supplier of choice for public transport tickets - for magnetic tickets, single/return tickets, multi-ride tickets, season and concessionary tickets, or indeed low cost RFID tickets for many rail, bus or ferry operators.

This expertise enables the division to successfully meet the challenging demands of today's fast moving and changing mass transit ticketing markets.
