Auto ID and RFID
Auto ID
As technology evolved to improve the collection of data (Auto I.D)
this was added to BemroseBooth manufacturing. In 1987 we were one
of the first UK companies to add magnetic stripes onto rail tickets
and in 1993, when barcodes for tracking parcels became popular, BemroseBooth
Secure Logistics invented the bullet barcode system which has now
become an industry standard. BemroseBooth was also the first company
to print barcodes "in line" on our presses. This enabled
us to offer our customers considerable cost savings.
RFID
The next step in the evolution of automatic data collection is Radio
Frequency Identification. This technology has been in development
for some years and as it's unit costs are now dropping its relevance
to Secure Logistics customers increases. We are actively working in
RFID and are well positioned to exploit the forecasted growth in this
technology.
We have already put our own development programs in place and progressed
a number of strategic partnerships in various applications.
The benefits of RFID vary accordingly to the application, but, in
parcel handling, they are likely to be:
Reduced losses and claims
Better tracking of parcels
Opportunity to enhance the value of service
Eliminate orientation to read barcodes
In order to drive down the cost of disposable RFID products, BemroseBooth
has launched a development project aimed at introducing in-house antenna
production and chip placement along with the required test and programming
competencies. Confidentiality agreements have already been signed
with key organisations and the project is now at an advanced stage,
with a two-phase investment plan being established. |
